In Ukraine, Oksana ran her own workshop, designing costumes for TV shows and theater productions alongside her best friend. Her life changed forever when she fled Ukraine due to the ongoing war, but despite the challenges, she found a new purpose in the Netherlands through Sheltersuit. Oksana initially started as a seamstress in the workshop, where her skills and dedication quickly became evident.
Since October 1, 2024, she has been training to become an assistant production manager, expanding her role to support and optimize production processes. This is how we create opportunities for people and invest in the growth and development of those who work with us.
A new beginning
When Oksana signed her employment contract at Sheltersuit, one thought stood out: “Finally, I can start living again.” Now working as a garment maker in Sheltersuit’s social workshop in Enschede, Oksana contributes to producing innovative products for people experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable groups. “I love the concept—people helping each other. When I was in a tough spot, others helped me. Now, I can help others in return.”

In Ukraine, Oksana ran her own workshop, designing costumes for TV shows and theater productions alongside her best friend. While her work then was mostly coordinating, she’s now learning the hands-on skills of sewing at Sheltersuit. “I’m getting better every day, and everyone helps me. If I don’t know something, I just ask.”
Growing with Sheltersuit
Oksana’s journey at Sheltersuit is only just beginning. As of October 1, 2024, she has started training to become an assistant production manager, expanding her role to support and optimize production processes. One of her challenges is adapting to a new computer system. “In Ukraine, I used a different keyboard, so I have to relearn everything,” she explains. “It’s not easy, but I’m doing my best and making progress every day.” Her determination and willingness to learn have made her an invaluable member of the team. “I’m grateful for the chance to grow and contribute more to Sheltersuit’s mission.”
Balancing work and family
Despite the setbacks, Luca has decided to persevere. With support from his girlfriend and training as a media designer, he slowly sees perspective again. He works at a government project in the Bijlmer and was able to arrange a temporary address with his girlfriend's parents, although he still has to hide from authorities because of the strict housing requirements in Amsterdam. The drive to make something of his life stems from a deep desire to turn the negative into something constructive. “I work and study because I want to achieve something positive. I want a new direction for myself,” he says. But he remains realistic: the road to recovery is not easy, especially without financial and emotional support from family or agencies.
Living in the present
Oksana chooses to focus on the here and now, even with an uncertain future. “I take each day as it comes. I work, improve my sewing skills, and learn Dutch. Every day, I try to be better than yesterday. I want to create something meaningful for the people who need our products.”
While the future remains unclear, one thing is certain: Oksana is determined to make a difference. “I’m proud that through my work, I can help others. It makes me feel like myself again.”
